In October 2015 G&P began a project to design and build a kiln for drying and heat-treating lumber. G&P partnered with the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Algonquin College. The Algonquin team designed the components to actively monitor and control the temperature, humidity and airflow in order to both heat treat and dry specific lumber to expected industry specifications. Continuous readings can be viewed remotely via a wireless network.

G&P began with a shipping container, fully insulated the drying section, and installed a furnace, ducting and dehumidifiers. A dolly is used to move the stacks of lumber into and out of the kiln. Work was completed over the winter, and the kiln went into production in May 2016.

The kiln will allow G&P to enter international markets where import regulations require the heat treatment of lumber prior to shipping. The kiln will also speed up production by replacing or supplementing, its air-drying process with kiln drying.

G&P now has available an industrial wood chipper/shredder to ease handling of tree branches and wood scraps. The chips can be used as a wonderful mulch for landscaping.
